Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP)
The polyvagal theory explains how our physiological and emotional states influence our interactions with the world. Individuals with highly sensitive nervous systems, often those experiencing trauma, anxiety, or hypersensitivity, may find social interactions particularly challenging.
This ability to feel safe with others is governed by the vagus nerve, part of the autonomic nervous system. Stephen Porges termed this the Social Engagement System (SES), which detects unconscious cues about the safety of a person or situation. The constant operation of the SES is vital for survival but can be draining for those with highly sensitive and hypervigilant nervous systems.
If you struggle with dysregulation or feeling safe in your world the Safe and Sound Protocol can help.
What is the Safe and Sound Protocol?
The Safe and Sound Protocol, developed by Dr. Stephen Porges, the creator of the Polyvagal Theory, is a non-invasive listening program designed to reduce stress and foster calm and resilience. Through specially filtered music, the program engages muscles and nerves that stimulate the vagus nerve, promoting a greater regulation of our physiological state. This enhanced regulation leads to feelings of stability and calm, which in turn support improved social engagement and successful therapeutic outcomes.

The Safe and Sound Protocol can be particularly beneficial for individuals who:
- Have difficulty regulating their moods and emotions
- Have experienced trauma
- Experience challenges with sensory integration
- Struggle to form deep and meaningful connections with others
- Need additional support for their current therapeutic modalities
